- Yes, by all means, use the higher interrupts if the cards and their drivers -
- sometimes drivers won't support all possible card settings! - can use them.
- Start by using the higher interrupts on cards with 16-bit connectors, because
- 8-bit cards can't access IRQs higher than 7.
-
- And don't use MSD to get advice on configuring a system; I've seen something
- called 'snooper' which does a better job (but nothing's perfect).
-
- IRQ 5 is usually available on an AT (it is used for hard drive controllers on
- XTs other than Tandy 1000s and some bus mice).
-
- IRQ 7 is usually available (technically, it's assigned to the parallel port,
- but DOS doesn't use interrupts for parallel I/O and many cards don't even
- bother connecting the interrupt line, causing grief in XENIX/UNIX, NetWare,
- and OS/2 environments).
-
- IRQ 10 should be free.
-
- IRQ 11 might be used for an Adaptec-style SCSI host adapter.
-
- IRQ 12 may not be free, depending on whose mouse driver you use.
-
- IRQ 15 will be used for the secondary IDE channel, if present and enabled.
- Otherwise, it'll also be free.
